This warm, creamy sweet porridge combines the sweetness of jackfruit with the richness of coconut! Pengat nangka manis is a classic Malay dessert that’s perfect for a cozy night in. The sago pearls add a lovely, chewy texture, making it a truly satisfying treat. You can enjoy this dessert warm, fresh off the stove, or chilled for a refreshing twist.
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Serves 3–4
Ingredients
6 pieces jackfruit, sliced into thin strips
2 tablespoons sago pearls
1 pandan leaf, tied into a knot
1 cup thick coconut milk
3 tablespoons jaggery, dissolved in 1 cup hot water
Method
1. Wash and drain the sago pearls.
2. Filter the dissolved jaggery to ensure a smooth mixture.
3. In a pot, combine the jaggery water, jackfruit, pandan leaf, and sago pearls. Stir and bring to a gentle boil.
4. Add the coconut milk and a pinch of salt. Stir and gently simmer (do not boil).
5. Serve warm or chilled. Enjoy!
Tips
● Don’t overcook the coconut milk: Once added, keep the heat low and avoid boiling the milk too vigorously to prevent curdling.
● You can substitute jaggery with gula melaka (palm sugar) for a more authentic, caramel-like taste.
● Soak the sago pearls in advance: Soaking for 10–15 minutes helps them cook faster and more evenly.
● Use ripe jackfruit: The sweeter and softer the jackfruit, the better the flavour and texture of the dish.
