Why Are We Still Paying More For Kindness?

Rethinking Plant-Milk Surcharges in Malaysia’s Coffee Culture

Coffee is more than a drink in Malaysia,  it’s a daily ritual. It fuels mornings, powers meetings, anchors friendships, and offers comfort in busy lives. Our coffee culture is vibrant, diverse, and growing fast.

Yet one thing remains stubbornly outdated: paying extra for plant-based milk.

Across most coffee shops, choosing soy, oat, almond, or other plant-milks comes with a surcharge. It’s treated as an “upgrade”, a premium option. But when that choice is better for the planet, animals, and often our health, the question becomes unavoidable:

Why does kindness still cost more?

Plant-Milk Is Mainstream – So Why the Surcharge?

Plant-milk is no longer niche. Once requested mainly by vegans or people with lactose intolerance, it is now a mainstream preference. Many customers choose it for taste, digestion, sustainability, or animal welfare. Oat milk, in particular, has become a café staple.

So why the surcharge?

The common explanation is cost, that plant-milk is more expensive than dairy. But as demand grows, production scales up, and supply chains improve, that gap is shrinking rapidly. In some markets, it has nearly disappeared. Meanwhile, dairy milk prices fluctuate significantly, yet coffee prices rarely drop when dairy becomes cheaper.

Which raises an important question: is the surcharge still about cost, or simply tradition?

When Price Becomes a Barrier

Even small surcharges influence behaviour. An extra 50 sen or RM1 might seem minor, but over time it adds up. For students, families, and regular coffee drinkers, it becomes a deterrent.

People who want to choose plant-milk hesitate.
People who are curious often don’t try.
People ready to change get nudged back to dairy.

And so a powerful opportunity is lost, not because consumers resist change, but because price quietly discourages it.

If we want sustainable and compassionate choices to become normal, they must also be easy.

Coffee Shops Shape Culture – Not Just Menus

Coffee brands don’t just sell drinks. They shape habits.

They influence what’s trendy, what’s normal, and what becomes routine. When cafés introduce new flavours, people line up to try them. When loyalty programs reward behaviour, habits change almost overnight.

Now imagine if plant-milk were treated the same way.

No surcharge.
No awkward pause at the counter.
No calculation of whether kindness fits today’s budget.

Just choice, equal, accessible, normal.

Why This Shift Matters

Switching from dairy to plant-milk is one of the simplest ways individuals can reduce their environmental footprint. Plant-milks typically require less land, less water, and generate fewer emissions than dairy.

There’s also animal welfare. Dairy production relies on intensive systems that separate calves from mothers and repeatedly cycle cows through pregnancy, a reality many consumers are uncomfortable supporting.

Health plays a role too. Many people report improved digestion, lower cholesterol, and better overall wellbeing after switching. Not to mention that the majority of Malaysians are lactose-intolerant, making it difficult to digest the sugar (lactose) found in dairy products.

Yet when coffee shops add a surcharge, they inadvertently discourage choices that benefit people, animals, and the planet.

That’s a big consequence for a small fee.

A Leadership Opportunity for Malaysian Coffee Brands

Our recent Malaysia Most-Friendly Plant-Milk Coffee Shop Ranking examined 12 major local and international coffee chains. While most now offer plant-milk, very few treat it as equal.

This presents a powerful opportunity.

The first major brand in Malaysia to permanently remove plant-milk surcharges wouldn’t just win customer loyalty, they would redefine coffee culture. They would show that sustainability and compassion aren’t premium values, but everyday ones.

And once one brand leads, others inevitably follow.

Because suddenly, the question shifts from “Can we do this?” to “Why aren’t we?”

The Power of the Consumer

Change starts with people.

Each time we request plant-milk, we show demand.
Each time we question the surcharge, we spark conversation.
Each time we support brands that lead, we reinforce progress.

Coffee culture thrives on community, and communities have power.

So next time you order your latte, pause for a moment. Think about what your cup represents, not just taste, but values.

And imagine a future where kindness costs nothing extra.

Because really, it shouldn’t.
